JAY's Story

"I bow to no one, I won't take prisoners and I don't suffer fools lightly (especially racists and right-wingers.)" ~~~ me, Jay Hackett Trying to figure me out is a 'fool's errand'. "All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible." ~~~ Thomas Edward Lawrence (16 August 1888 – 19 May 1935) better known as T.E. Lawrence or Lawrence of Arabia; for a brief time he also used the name T. E. Shaw AKA "Lawrence of Arabia" "This is where we are at right now, as a whole. No one is left out of the loop. We are experiencing a reality based on a thin veneer of lies and illusions. A world where greed is our God and wisdom is sin, where division is key and unity is fantasy, where the ego-driven cleverness of the mind is praised, rather than the intelligence of the heart." ~~~ The Comedian Bill Hicks Go to my Facebook page.....it gives you an idea of what my eclectic life has been like......under my nickname - "JAY HACKETT" "RETIREMENT IS ABSOLUTELY F**KIN' AWESOME!!" ~~~ me My life has been an embarrassment of riches. With my family and especially my health (various problems but I'm still kicking) and wealth also. Due to financial independence, I was able to retire early. 12 years early. With all my free time I have been able to spend a lot of time with my daughter's family. Such a gift, I'm blessed and grateful. "O, blest retirement! friend to life's decline - How blest is he who crowns in shades like these, A youth of labor with an age of ease!" ~~~ Oliver Goldsmith. Retired and in my 12th year of retirement now. 10 years officially with Social Security and Medicare and with nary a problem with those two programs. I am a 45 plus years vegetarian and I've been told by my cardiologist that was the reason I reached this advanced stage of my life. What a freakin' blast I'm having! And with most of my hair left too. I never thought it would be so wonderful and as life fulfilling. I envisioned myself being a millionaire (in oh so many grateful ways. Think of a quote from Tony on "The Sopranos"- 4th season, episode 6 --clue>>>not just monetarily...yet monetarily also...lol!') by the time I retired and we made it. I always wondered why those who were millionaires worried about their money so much when God provides...seems silly to me even now. I/we are blessed, 'cause we have everything we need, and we have no wants; which is an awesome position to be in. Because we never have a schedule (work etc.) I rarely know what the actual day is, which is strangely awesome. Each day is like Christmas Day, our birthdays, the weekend, a holiday and the best vacation day ever, every single day. In some ways I feel that I'm in the same mental state as when I worked - screwin' around with people's heads and having fun every day. We are also helping out in anyway possible for Shawnee and Rick's catering business in NH. Living in Wickford, RI and passing through the village, only 2 minutes away by car, is like taking a daily stress-reliever. I try to walk there but I am handicapped with back problems.. About 30 years ago we were looking for a larger house in South County but we were never able to find a better neighborhood or neighbors. Now we don't have a need to downsize...lol! Thoughts I live by every day: "STAY SAFE AND BE COOL!" ~~~ me "I've never worried about the bridges I've burnt 'cause I can swim and/or skate." ~~~ me again "Ah, but I was so much older then/I'm younger than that now" ~~~ Bob Dylan "Drive fast on empty streets with nothing in mind except falling in love and not getting arrested." ~~~ Hunter S. Thompson "Over the years I have become a magical blend of herbs and spices.... quite warm and sugary....and, of course, perfectly aged, intense & increasingly spicy." ~~~ Jay Hackett "CLINTON NEVER INHALED, I NEVER EXHALED." ~~~ Jay Hackett "Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only at night" ~~~ Edgar Allan Poe "When the going gets weird the weird turn 'PRO'" ~~~ Hunter S. Thompson "I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference." -~~~ Robert Frost "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy." ~~~ Proverbs 31:8-9 Living on investments now till the inevitable end of times. AND I'm closer to the end then the beginning.....LOL!! .... I live in Wickford, Rhode Island with my wife, girlfriend and best friend of 53+ wonderful years, Joyce (Ferry), Warwick Vets, 1970. Married for 53 years in 2022. We have lived in the same house in Wickford since 1973. As I like to say: "We bought into the neighborhood not the house." Wickford is such a lovely spot and thankfully we don't live in the Village proper. Too much weekend congestion and water related damage to the houses there. Wickford is a great place to live and also to walk and shop in no matter what the season is. We have been blessed with a daughter, Shawn Coleen Hackett-Crawn. A beautiful young girl was born to Shawn and her husband Rick Crawn, Eilah Grace Crawn. Eilah Grace was their first child and our first grandchild. A second granddaughter was born in 2010, Olivia Jayne. Needless to say we feel that we are blessed again, along with feeling extremely excited. Shawn Coleen and her family live in Northwood, NH on Pleasant Lake. Their home is being remodeled. Shawnee and Rick have their own businesse in NH. After 10 years I retired in 2005 as President of the Rhode Island Computer Museum Inc. in North Kingstown. RI. It is a non-profit museum at the time located in the historic Shady Lea Mill. retiring at 56 years old and recovering from 2 major operations, I was bored silly, so I picked up a stressless job just for someplace to hide out, hang out and not get in trouble. Met some wonderful people there and some of the worst human beings on this planet. Left that job in 2010, lived on investments, and in 2012 officially went on Medicare and Social Security. I'm currently working on a few entrepreneurial projects to bide my time. We both are ready to spend more time in New Hampshire during the warmer months. OK, the winter also. Over the years I worked at many companies including my own. I have been the Owner and President, VP, GM, and Sales Manager of local, national and international Automotive Aftermarket Wholesale businesses. I have helmed the management of many Antique/Classic/Vintage Car Shows throughout the Northeast including many at the Lars Anderson Museum of Transportation in Brookline, MA and the MG Museum in VT. I received many plaudits from the management of the venues themselves for running their most successful shows year after year. Many were multiple day events. For 2 years I was President and on the Board of Director's of "British Motor Cars of New England", the largest multi-marque car club in New England. I was the co-founder, along with my friend Dwight Howie, of the "Irish Roadster Association" car club aka the "IRA". Yes, that is correct. The "IRA"...;-) ......lol!.... It was founded to confront/confound some pretentious twits in the British sports car hobby. The club's mission statement was: "To annoy those who need to be annoyed and to scare little children". For many years I wrote columns for various car periodicals . During the late 1960's I sang with the regionally popular Rock and Roll band called "The East Coast Central 6" aka "the ECC6". I have treasured memories of that time. Some people that I met and hung with during those exciting years are still close to me today including: Joyce Ferry, my wife and best friend of 53+ years and Paul Worthen who is my close friend and former band-mate of 54 years; Unfortunately Paul passed away in 2016. I have banked precious nuggets of my life back then so that even those friends that I do not wish to deal with anymore from that period still exist fondly (and, of course, some otherwise) in my memories and dreams. AND BOY DO I DREAM!....... A few years ago I had been jamming with a Bluesy Rock and Roll band I called "THE SLAVES OF DEMON DOGS." I carry that name to future band projects because unfortunately I had 2 throat operations and a heart procedure in 2005 so that ended my participation rather abruptly. I am still writing lyrics though and I currently have a venture called "REVEREND SQUIRREL AND THE INSANE PREACHER PROJECT" which is a spoken word project. Also I will be recording my friend Paul Worthen's poetry/prose and my works in the future. My passion is writing lyrics and alt.poetry. I have journals chock full of musings and I have to get them onto CDs and DVD. By late 2022 I had hoped to have a sound recording studio set up to record the spoken word/poetry/free-form/prose/voice-over arts. I already have most of the components in place but have diverted my attention and free time toward my daughter and her family and my 3 years of deadly diseases to recover from. An operation to remove a cancerous tumor from my right temple also slowed things a bit. I have been a vegetarian since 1975 and my Cardiac Surgeon said that I would of died in the late 1990's if I wasn't one. I am blessed as it has taught me what my priorities in life should be. Speaking of priorities, I live my life "ONE DAY AT A TIME". (btw 25+ years) One of my money-making ventures for 40 plus years has been selling first edition books, antique automotive literature, sports collectibles and general vintage ephemera. I have collected ten's of thousands of items over the years. To keep my collections lean I sell all excess items today on eBAY or by word of mouth. I also trade. Before eBAY I sold at Auto Racing venues through out the Northeast and at numerous Vintage Car Shows that I ran during the 1990's and earlier this century.. My favorite venues are the Larz Anderson Auto Museum aka the Museum of Transportation in Brookline, MA where I ran many shows over the years, and also many at the now defunct "MG Museum" in Westminster, VT and Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, CT. Also at Lime Rock Race Park on Vintage Weekend. Since my early twenties a passion of mine has been British sports cars (and of course our 1969 Oldsmobile 442 back in 1969-1973 also). I owned a Triumph and an MG during the '60's and '70's. I have owned a 1968 Triumph TR250 since 1980. It is one of only 8,484 built and only around 400 are left I restored it in the early 1990's for Joycee's 40th birthday and I am currently in the process of attempting to restore it again. It is not a garage-queen. We averaged about 12,000 miles a year driving with the top down (And with the windows rolled down --- the only way) all throughout New England. In the future we would love to move to New Hampshire to be near Shawnee's family. Not during the Winter though. We will still keep the house in Wickford, RI and buy an RV, Camper, 2nd home or a 3 season cabin.. Just not sure which yet. I was currently in the planning stages of an eclectic bookstore/collectible site which I will probably open on the Internet first and then possibly a "brick and mortar" shop in NH. We are currently looking for investment property/land in NH. I have started some new companies "Upallnight Publishing, Products, Promotions and Productions, Co.", "Reverend Squirrel and the Insane Preacher Project", "Slaves of Demon Dogs" and "Stay Safe and be Cool Products, Co." Too young to bury my Entrepreneurial skills for good. "ALWAYS STAY SAFE AND BE COOL!" and remember: "CLINTON NEVER INHALED; I NEVER EXHALED." JAY........
